Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Disability
If you are no longer able to work due to alpha-1, you may be eligible for CPP Disability. However, because alpha-1 is little known, people often have to fight hard to get benefits. Make sure that your application is thorough and that your medical practitioner describes fully your current physical state and prognosis. It is a good idea to submit general information about alpha-1 and its effects with your application. Do not be discouraged, and continue to the appeal stage if your first application is denied.
For information on CPP Disability, visit the Service Canada website.
Income Tax Disability Tax Credit
You may be eligible for the Federal Non-refundable Disability Tax Credit (line 316 on your federal income tax form). This is separate from any other disability benefits you may be receiving. Just because you are receiving other disability benefits does not necessarily mean that you will qualify for the disability income tax credit. On the other hand, some individuals who are not receiving any other disability benefits may qualify for the income tax disability tax credit.
For more information on the federal non-refundable disability tax credit, visit Revenue Canada’s website.
The Disability Tax Credit Certificate, which your doctor must fill out, is also available online at the link above. It is important for your physician to stress the limits to your mobility and lifestyle, as alpha-1 is not well known to most regulators.
